Thefirstcommerciallyavailablestemcell-derivedproductslikelywillcomefromadultstemcellsandbeforthetreatmentofneurologicaldisorderssuchasParkinson'sandAlzheimer'sdisease,theheadofanadultstemcellcompanytoldUnitedPressInternational.

Theproductscouldbeavailableinthenextthreeyears,saidMartinMcGlynn,presidentandchiefexecutiveofficerofStemCellsInc.,ofPaloAlto,Calif.,whichisworkingtodevelopmedicaltreatmentsderivedfromadultstemcells.McGlynnwasexpectedtomakesimilarremarksatTechvest's4thAnnualHealthcareConference&ExpoinBostonWednesday.

Stemcellshavetheabilitytogiverisetodifferentcelltypesinthebody.Theyhavethepotentialtoreplacetissuesdamagedbydisease.

Embryonicstemcellscangiverisetoanycelltypeandthushavethegreatestpotentialtotreatthewidestrangeofdiseases.However,theyarecontroversialbecauseharvestingthemrequiresthedestructionofembryos.Adultstemcells,whichcanbederivedfromadulttissueswithoutharmingthedonor,offeralesscontroversialalternative,althoughtheycangiveriseonlytoalimitednumberofcelltypes.

Mypredictionisthat...we'relikelytoseeoneortwostemcellproductsonthemarketinthisdecade,McGlynnsaid.Productsderivedfromadultstemcellsarelikelytobethefirstproductsbecausethesearefurtheralonginthedevelopmentprocessanddon'thavealltheregulatoryhurdlesthatareassociatedwithembryonicstemcells,hesaid.

Suchproductsprobablywillappearonthemarketstartingfromaround2005andcontinuinginthebackhalfofthisdecade,hesaid.

McGlynnpredictedthefirstproductswouldbetreatmentsfordegenerativediseasesofthecentralnervoussystem,includingParkinson's,Alzheimer's,strokeandparalysis.

Iwouldagreewith(McGlynn)thatsomeoftheearliestproductstoreachcommercializationwillbeforneurologicaldisorders,LindaPowers,managingdirectorofToucanCapital,aventurecapitalfirminBethesda,Md.,toldUPI.It'sstillupintheairwhether(thefirstproducts)willbeadultorembryonicstemcells,addedPowers,whosefirmhasmadeinvestmentsinbothadultandembryonicstemcellcompanies.

McGlynnsaidheexpectsembryonicstemcellseventuallytobecommercializedaswell.Subjecttotheavailabilityofcapital,Iwouldanticipateembryonicstemcellsciencewillcontinuetobeworkedonandimproved,hesaid.Overtime,scientistsmightlearnhowtofullyunlockthepotentialofembryonicstemcellsanddevelopthemasdiseasetreatments,hesaid.

Dependingoneconomicsandthedisease-treatingcapabilityofeachcellline,McGlynnadded,Wecouldhaveboth(adultandembryonicstemcell-derivedproducts)outthereonthemarket.
