Inflammation and immunity may be involved in the etiology and pathogenesis of schizophrenia and major mood disorders. There is evidence of both proinflammatory activation of the innate immune System and an activation of the T-cells of the adaptive immune system in both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This activation is reflected in alterations in circulating inflammatory cytokines. Elevated cytokine levels might lead to psychiatric symptoms through several mechanisms.
