ResearchersattheUniversityofMichiganinAnnArborhaveidentifiedagenethatisrequiredfortheproliferationofthreetypesofadultstemcellsfrommice.Stemcellsfromthecentralnervoussystem,theperipheralnervoussystemandthebloodallrelyonagenecalledBmi-1torenewthemselves.However,thegeneisnotrequiredfortheproliferationofprogenitorcellsfromthesametissues.

VanLohuizenalsofindsthatthegeneisneededfortherenewalofstemcells.Hisstudiesalsosuggestthatthegeneisactiveinsomecellsinthecerebellumthatdonotappeartobestemcells.
