On the cover: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects many soldiers returning from war as well as others subjected to unusual stresses. In this issue, Liu et al. (pp. 1055–1067) demonstrate that leaky RyR2 calcium release channels on the endoplasmic reticulum of hippocampal neurons play a key role in determining stress-induced cognitive dysfunction that is typical in PTSD. Staunching calcium leak either by treatment with a small molecule or by genetic ablation of a PKA site on RyR2 protects against stress-induced cognitive dysfunction. The painting on the cover illustrates that the mouse with leaky RyR2 channels is stressed out by the cat and tries to escape, whereas the mouse with nonleaky RyR2 channels is protected against stress-induced cognitive dysfunction.
