systems through a process known as hierarchical clustering. In orbit around
, o& Y# T) b o; mthese giants are dwarf galaxies, which are presumably remnants of the galactic
# s* ?1 W1 O+ {2 ?progenitors. Recent studies of the dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way have lead
5 z4 d: y- t: P/ msome astronomers to suspect that their orbits are not randomly distributed. This 2 j, j' I; c& t1 f' x$ V6 o
suspicion, which challenges current theories of galaxy formation, is now . o- j2 B6 d% d( W* M8 a- I, R
bolstered by the discovery of a plane of dwarf galaxies corotating as a coherent
$ m9 _2 c1 c: A0 kpancake-like structure around the Andromeda galaxy, the Milky Way’s close 3 M1 J0 A) P3 n; G$ @) P7 R7 s
neighbour and in many respects its ‘twin’. The structure is extremely thin yet
% l4 l6 {5 t& d9 T1 P+ \contains about half of the dwarf galaxies in the Andromeda system. The authors : D* N, l9 ]& g. w: b- W U
report that 13 of the 15 satellites in the plane share the same sense of
