Giant spiral galaxies are assembled from smaller
9 m2 ~. B3 D' \9 X( bsystems through a process known as hierarchical clustering. In orbit around ; r- U1 H9 F' R7 Q1 F$ ~
these giants are dwarf galaxies, which are presumably remnants of the galactic , H# V9 R0 h3 o- {
progenitors. Recent studies of the dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way have lead 6 {; i3 R8 M  a; u, x
some astronomers to suspect that their orbits are not randomly distributed. This + u/ b$ R/ K& Q7 |
suspicion, which challenges current theories of galaxy formation, is now / S( |! V8 N% ?. Z) P/ c* q
bolstered by the discovery of a plane of dwarf galaxies corotating as a coherent
8 _0 }/ @6 n6 Z6 R% s- hpancake-like structure around the Andromeda galaxy, the Milky Way’s close , w8 ]1 ^$ B# v8 R
neighbour and in many respects its ‘twin’. The structure is extremely thin yet
% b8 z) D0 S$ W( `" O6 N3 R$ Pcontains about half of the dwarf galaxies in the Andromeda system. The authors
