these giants are dwarf galaxies, which are presumably remnants of the galactic
( G, W9 K3 x3 J+ j# H* s0 Lprogenitors. Recent studies of the dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way have lead
9 f. t( |0 ~' O- i G# S7 @3 j. m, C0 Isome astronomers to suspect that their orbits are not randomly distributed. This
. ~: }4 r, n o) ^2 Y% zsuspicion, which challenges current theories of galaxy formation, is now - ^7 y1 I( p% Q
bolstered by the discovery of a plane of dwarf galaxies corotating as a coherent ! h% j+ S; \" |/ e
pancake-like structure around the Andromeda galaxy, the Milky Way’s close : c) V1 n$ f I8 o: q
neighbour and in many respects its ‘twin’. The structure is extremely thin yet & ^% C4 Q. k6 _9 c- g6 G8 U) @6 e
contains about half of the dwarf galaxies in the Andromeda system. The authors 6 a; [- ?* m6 e
report that 13 of the 15 satellites in the plane share the same sense of
