entertainment, particularly if adapted to mobile devices. Holography can provide
3 ^1 s2 b) s5 ~+ V" v8 uideal 3D viewing but is too slow or expensive for many applications. Multiview 0 L7 E1 O/ P- _. i- P% `9 d5 W
approaches are the alternative, exploiting various geometric optical tricks to
/ O6 O$ f9 T1 ycreate 3D images that can be viewed from many directions at the same time. A team working at Hewlett-Packard’s laboratories in Palo Alto
& p- A) v* G' T; H8 O# Vhas developed a new multiview 3D display that is particularly well suited to
* R- M& a6 H! l* \# Hmobile devices, which require thin displays with high spatial resolution and a 7 [, g" \3 t4 X& A6 D6 ~; w
wide-angle view zone. Central to the new device is a set of directional grating # ^/ G9 `, ?7 P; o: ^
pixels, associated with different views and colours, etched on the backlight
) J# M6 [/ v. W% C% L7 ~" i9 Xsurface. The display uses an LED-lit backlight very similar to those in use in

prototypes showing animated sequences of up to six different 200-view images at
