The cheetah is widely recognized ; g1 E- e+ q4 }8 l
as the fastest animal on land, with a reported top speed of 29 metres per # S7 b7 q% e. g2 k7 W
second. However, few precise measurements have been made and only rarely have . I4 b- p H t) u" a5 x& {9 v
speeds faster than racing greyhounds (18 metres per second) been recorded. Now a 8 ^3 t1 Q( @% f
team from the Royal Veterinary College, UK, working with the Botswana Predator $ U# i* U- x, @3 e
Conservation Trust, has used custom-built tracking collars containing GPS and
( i8 s, S# D7 D1 _% W9 Tinertial measurement units to capture the locomotor dynamics of cheetahs hunting ; w& N# M. u3 E* ]) c( M
in the wild. The
; m( @2 y1 m% ?2 f' h" btop speed observed was 25.9 metres per second (93 kilometres per hour). Most " \/ f% f* e% f% L
hunts involved only moderate speeds, their success relying on a combination of % |$ P+ W5 W5 {) k. C1 K% e, O2 t U7 L: k! L
