# t5 h+ x( U. m7 l* h" `1 L3 @$ F4 NOn the cover: Mammalian proteins on average last for only a few hours in individual cells. However, some proteins have exceptionally long lifetimes. In this issue, Toyama et al. (pp. 971–982) identify members of the long-lived proteome, finding diverse members such as nuclear pore complex (NPC) proteins, histones, myelin sheath proteins, and even enzymes to have lifespans in excess of 6 months, with some enduring through the lifetime of the rat. Many of these long-lived proteins, including components of the NPC, are known to play a significant role in aging and thus may represent weak links in the aging proteome. The authors use mass spectrometry to examine protein stability in the rat brain, and the cover depicts a simulated mass spectrometry plot in the form of an adult rat with the long-lived proteins highlighted in red.
