( x: g4 I* R' c! m' @4 b7 ~- z* GMesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may eventually be able to grow and strengthen muscles in humans, according to researchers at the University of Illinois. In mice, an injection of such stem cells helped rejuvenate skeletal muscle after exercise.

5 w( @8 s' |' p% N7 k. I2 qThe treatment, which was injected directly in the mice's legs, may someday be used in humans to combat age-related declines in muscle structure and function.

2 E2 Y8 t2 X# i  y! u3 p# z. UMSCs are attractive to scientists because of their ability to make several types of cells that appear in human skeletal tissues, such as cartilage, bone and fat.* M& q) O' N% U9 T. D

University of Illinois researchers injected the MSCs before several bouts of eccentric exercise--designed to simulate the lengthening contractions performed during resistance training in humans that cause mild muscle damage.  E- g4 d8 ]. U# N5 x0 @1 N4 |

4 k( @( o. s# l' T" x1 gResearchers detailed their findings in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, showing that the injection increased the rate of repair and boosted the growth and strength of the leg muscles in the exercising mice.3 S2 P4 o3 U) Q  z* \

& Y9 u$ t) [# l. |MSCs, which occur naturally in the body, seem to stimulate muscle precursor cells, called satellite cells, spurring tissue repair after injury, according to the study. Once these satellite cells are activated, they fuse to the damaged muscle fibers and form new fibers to rebuild muscle and improve strength., t# m: {* d+ W

"Satellite cells are a primary target for the rejuvenation of aged muscle, since activation becomes increasingly impaired and recovery from injury is delayed over the lifespan," said University of Illinois kinesiology and community health professor Marni Boppart, who led the research, in a university news story.
