Theresearchersthenusedchemicalstokillthebetacellsinagroupoflaboratorymice,turningthemiceintodiabetics.Thescientiststhengraftedsomeoftheinsulin-producingtissueintotheanimals.Thetransplantedtissuemadeinsulin,respondingtothelevelsofsugarinthebloodstreamofthemice,andkeptthemicealive.

Atleastforashortperiod,weextendedthelifeoftheseanimalsconvincinglyandshowedthatuponremovalofthegrafttheanimalssufferedsevererelapseofthedisease,saidSeungK.Kim,aStanfordresearcherandseniorauthorofthestudy.
