Synopsis: Sepsis and abdominal surgery induce flaking of the endothelial glycocalix, leading to impaired microcirculation and, consequently, organ failure, which strongly correlates with mortality rates in intensive care units. During sepsis, the quantification of glycocalix compounds within the plasma can be used as an indicator for severity grades. Future efforts will be made to preserve the endothelial glycocalix. This will maintain its sieve function and modulation of endothelial permeability, coagulation, and vasomotion, eventually improving patient outcome. 2 p5 R1 i3 M- O `
