"We use a screening approach to find out which genes are responsible for the reduced function of stem cells. In preliminary investigations, we have identified a gene that activates a protein when DNA or chromosome ends (telomers) are damaged. This particular protein also impedes the proper function of stem cells. We hope to obtain further insights into these processes and subsequently search for a compound that might inhibit the damaging protein and hence enable the regeneration of organ or muscle cells in diseased or elderly patients."--Dr. K. So if we can specifically target beta‐catenin in the bone marrow, we can have potentially a more effective and less toxic anti‐leukaemia therapy that can efficiently eradicate leukaemic stem cells but spares healthy blood stem cells."--Professor Eric So of King's College London.

% ~% U- h! `3 ]( [7 K"It's two sides of the coin: Mechanical force can induce differentiation, and here we said if you can lower the forces between the substrate and the cells, they stay pluripotent. They are complementary processes. Our paper shows that mechanical environment plays at least as important a role as chemical growth factors, if not greater. In vivo, cells produce growth factors for a short time and then they stop. On the other hand, mechanical forces bear on every cell all the time."--mechanical science and engineering professor Ning Wang of University of Illinois.
