There is no clear cut difference between cancer initiating cells (CICs) and cancer stem cells (CSCs). CICs more specifically describe the transformed cells that give rise to primary cancer or tumor. CSCs try to cover the hypothesis of both cancer initiating and maintaining cells. There is no experimental evidence demonstrating the difference between cancer initiating and maintaining cells. Different scientists may prefer one another of these two terms. For example, Dr. John Dick, the first scientist that revealed the existence of cancer stem cells, prefers the term of leukemia initiating cells or cancer initiating cells. Dr. Irv weissman, the first scientist that proposed the hypothesis of cancer stem cells, prefers the term of cancer stem cells. Since Dr. Sean Morrison claimed absence of CSCs in melanoma, Irv called the CD271+ melanoma cells as melanoma-initiating cells to emphasize the identification of CSCs in the early phase of melanoma (or melanoma in situ). |
