The main difference between this and the first edition is the addition of a final chapter on the use of

from teachers who have used the book as a course text. There are, of course, several excellent computer
2 f; @" G: w" U- v9 x% y6 Mpackages into which one can, more or less mindlessly, plug one's molecular data, and recover a tree with
2 S" z! C! S7 ~/ G+ N0 l8 ]mysterious `bootstrap values' attached to it. I think it is important, therefore, that biologists should
' A( T4 A3 y, j; }3 L# Hunderstand the logic underlying these packages, and this I have tried to explain. But I do urge them to
4 n( [( \; k7 R$ i, Vremember that molecular data can be used to answer questions about the mechanisms of evolution, as3 y) C/ Z) p$ p6 `. Q1 C/ A
well as about phylogeny.
2 B. S: Z0 R8 I- y u& xI have also taken the opportunity to rewrite some sections that students have found confusing. The two# s, S: l* b; H4 A. U7 D2 @8 @
chapters that seem to have caused most difficulty are those on the evolution of sex, and on evolutionary
) `$ G# H/ {% V* cgame theory. It is ironic that these are the topics on which I have concentrated my own research: perhaps
2 j" i7 w0 d" J2 `: k sI am too close to them to see the difficulties. In any case, I have rewritten both chapters, and hope that
$ ]$ b! q G2 ^2 mthey are now easier to follow.
8 v( z# @/ t* c2 N9 jIn general, the discussion of current areas of research in the first edition has stood the test of time rather( e% B$ C3 b% v
well. I have expanded some sections, in particular those on the evolution of prokaryotes, and on. a! b; e; l4 j1 v4 h' x
parasitism and mutualism. Finally, I have corrected a few errors that crept into the first edition, for which
