course in statistical bioinformatics. We hope that it will first serve as a comprehensive

researchers who are motivated to learn statistical analysis concepts and techniques9 q9 B2 Y4 e1 f, L2 S+ g3 c
in bioinformatics. Statistical and quantitative science audiences who have not yet
( J8 G7 }3 x' R5 n5 cdealt with challenging statistical issues in recent information-rich biological and biomedical
8 Q, S) I1 ~0 Edata analysis may also benefit from this book by efficiently reviewing the+ ^8 X: Y, X0 S" x; ~# r% F5 X
different statistical concepts and techniques in such analyses. In particular, the four6 K! i ^* U4 T. H; ~
separate blocks in this book—statistical foundation, high-dimensional analysis,! E$ ~! ?/ K+ | w$ l$ u
advanced topics, and multigene systems analysis—can be somewhat independently
5 o* o/ i- ]$ X3 B% S/ |studied and taught in a course based on relevant needs and time restrictions for an4 \% d2 Q) Q9 ]* i% w1 @* }" w7 I

A similar outline as organized in this book has been used for several years in a) {5 Q( ~1 K5 \) K2 o
one-semester graduate course which is open to students with diverse backgrounds at8 W6 N( _" q3 w. g# D$ ~
the University of Virginia. By publishing this book, we felt that these contents
1 V: w) z1 F- p/ E& Ycould be significantly enhanced by direct contributions of more specialized experts, o2 e8 k! ?8 q" N/ q, ?9 n' g% P
in the broad field of bioinformatics. In this multiauthor book, we have yet tried to
N) l3 s* Z& \8 k+ E% Amaintain the need of a high-level mathematical and statistical understanding at a minimum.: x7 \+ B/ R0 w" f" t0 W" j: m
Readers of this book are thus assumed to have not much more than a basic college, E, |6 V1 m) {) |, G0 E$ d4 K
calculus level of mathematical understanding. A knowledge of matrix algebra3 G- i7 |4 O- c' B0 R( Q3 [) i2 y
would also be useful but is not a prerequisite.% o, T: ?, c# }
