introduction to a broad range of topics in this area for life science students and
% m6 O T1 W T, f9 ~3 j9 K$ Kresearchers who are motivated to learn statistical analysis concepts and techniques
: e. K6 w' i5 K) Gin bioinformatics. Statistical and quantitative science audiences who have not yet- P' M6 p4 {6 r0 h" b8 l) ?
dealt with challenging statistical issues in recent information-rich biological and biomedical
! k3 G/ ^" }2 Y$ S" w0 g4 ^. Y. u1 Tdata analysis may also benefit from this book by efficiently reviewing the2 D6 {/ M: s( V2 b+ Z/ Y( q. d- s
different statistical concepts and techniques in such analyses. In particular, the four" q4 c+ v' L6 X& Y% B
separate blocks in this book—statistical foundation, high-dimensional analysis,
9 E* Z, \( _, S2 madvanced topics, and multigene systems analysis—can be somewhat independently' [: D8 P" b6 j- a) k
studied and taught in a course based on relevant needs and time restrictions for an
0 C ~2 f" \' }8 reffective learning purpose.: N1 l& R% Z3 n2 D1 G& R- u# l! A
A similar outline as organized in this book has been used for several years in a
# b% Z3 w7 ~, O8 S% Z7 Eone-semester graduate course which is open to students with diverse backgrounds at
& X% T& v- I+ c) n* t) Y+ Xthe University of Virginia. By publishing this book, we felt that these contents
# ?& Z Z, l4 D1 \1 ccould be significantly enhanced by direct contributions of more specialized experts9 B. S# K& K1 j" d
in the broad field of bioinformatics. In this multiauthor book, we have yet tried to
5 P9 Z1 f6 v+ ~maintain the need of a high-level mathematical and statistical understanding at a minimum.
9 C* z( H# h9 `. dReaders of this book are thus assumed to have not much more than a basic college
0 P" C1 p; J! mcalculus level of mathematical understanding. A knowledge of matrix algebra1 H) \' M, R8 X+ K; I- H
would also be useful but is not a prerequisite.9 @: V) K- I( P* y+ w
