UsingtheRNAigenesilencingmethod,Drs.TsaiandMcKaydisruptednormalnucleosteminexpressionpatternsinrodentCNSstemcellsandhumanosteosarcomacancercells.Theyfoundthattheaberrantdown-regulationofnucleostemininthesecellscausedadecreaseincellproliferation,suggestingthattheexpressionofnucleosteminisrequiredforstemcell--andsomecancercell--proliferation.2 K6 y6 P0 X D( N3 X2 Q9 ~7 O: u
Althoughtheprecisemechanismofnucleosteminactionisnotyetfullyunderstood,theidentificationofagenewhoseproteinproductspecificallypromotestheproliferationofstemcellsandsomecancercellshasimportantclinicalimplicationsforboththeuseofstemcellsinregenerativemedicineaswellasthetreatmentofcancer.AsDr.Tsaiexplains,Thecharacterizationofnucleosteminsuggeststhatauniqueprimitivestateissharedbybothstemcellsandcancercelllines.Theidentificationofcommonmoleculessharedbybothstemcellsandcancercellsmayfacilitatethediscoveryofself-renewingpopulationswithinagiventumorbyevaluatingtheirexpressionlevels.Perhaps,inthefuture,targetingthesecellswillachieveabettertherapeuticoutcome.: ~0 F" ?0 r7 W+ K- s( k
