7 g: q1 I( w1 J( O, FExtractingmorestemcellsfromthelostbabyteethofseven-andeight-year-olds,ShicalledthenewgroupofcellsSHED(stemcellsfromhumanexfoliateddeciduousteeth).Inthelab,theculturedcellsgrewquickly,formingsphere-likeclustersindicativeofafastrateofproliferationnotobservedinstemcellsisolatedfrombonemarroworadultteeth.Notonlydidtheygrowrapidly,butwhenimplantedundertheskinofimmunocompromisedmice,SHEDinducedboneformation--afeatthatstemcellsextractedfromadultwisdomteethcouldnotaccomplish.SHEDcellsalsotriggeredneuralcellformationinthebrainandfatcellgrowth;stemcellsfromadultteeth,ontheotherhand,arenotasgoodatneuralcellgenerationandcannottriggerfatcellgrowthatall.AreportdescribingthesefindingswaspublishedonlinethisweekbytheProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences.
