Glasses-free three-dimensional (3D) displays could

ideal 3D viewing but is too slow or expensive for many applications. Multiview 7 c2 {1 C6 T* @: L
approaches are the alternative, exploiting various geometric optical tricks to
7 u& O" }% r) O1 s5 S/ A8 bcreate 3D images that can be viewed from many directions at the same time. A team working at Hewlett-Packard’s laboratories in Palo Alto
" {* O# ~8 J6 D' j6 [& ~has developed a new multiview 3D display that is particularly well suited to
9 m/ N2 z4 J, V# O/ Y' }* Pmobile devices, which require thin displays with high spatial resolution and a % U( _; `1 ?: U4 l9 ?- V: ?' Q
wide-angle view zone. Central to the new device is a set of directional grating % E8 M$ d0 {1 j+ F7 M# C
pixels, associated with different views and colours, etched on the backlight 6 J% c9 k$ M$ I/ y" l
surface. The display uses an LED-lit backlight very similar to those in use in 9 f5 D9 l1 k, I6 @
LCD screens today, and is demonstrated in action in transparent hand-held 0 ^: ^! x t p' {' F' N
prototypes showing animated sequences of up to six different 200-view images at ) j" p) }2 D$ N Z1 E4 O
a resolution of 127 pixels per inch. The cover image represents a 3D image from 1 R# f3 ^+ A. r$ A- \8 g
a passively modulated backlight.
