/ f$ `9 G3 t& o; U" H0 _" Iideal 3D viewing but is too slow or expensive for many applications. Multiview 0 k. n7 }8 U& U& _# `
approaches are the alternative, exploiting various geometric optical tricks to
7 N$ d5 w9 U+ h9 @, screate 3D images that can be viewed from many directions at the same time. A team working at Hewlett-Packard’s laboratories in Palo Alto
; X3 Y$ I; E9 T5 l/ k/ S& {has developed a new multiview 3D display that is particularly well suited to - t, O- H/ {2 N9 t
mobile devices, which require thin displays with high spatial resolution and a
7 V, u$ n# ^% }! w' o3 X2 `7 ^wide-angle view zone. Central to the new device is a set of directional grating ! { v. y2 ]1 T0 E
pixels, associated with different views and colours, etched on the backlight 0 g; X" p. y! j* B
surface. The display uses an LED-lit backlight very similar to those in use in # E: o* A! B2 [+ I
LCD screens today, and is demonstrated in action in transparent hand-held 1 ]3 k9 ?' `* W8 L2 [1 p
