On the cover: The membrane attack complex lyses microbes that challenge the host by making pores in cell membranes. In this issue, Llorca, Lea, Gros, and colleagues reveal the stepwise structural buildup of the pore and host-cell protection from bystander damage. The cover image shows the crystal structure of C5b6, the first step in MAC assembly, and a model for how complement components C6–C9 assemble into an arc based on the cryo-electron microscopy structure of sC5b9.
