For the induction of mature cells into pluripotent stem cells, Prof. Sir. John B. Gurdon, a British developmental biologist from the University of Cambridge shared the 2012 Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine with Prof. Shinya Yamanaka from Kyoto University. Before this, the Nobel prize went to the two contribution of stem cell research, bone marrow transplant by Prof. Donnal Thomas in 1990 and embryonic stem cells (ESCs) by Prof. Sir. Martin Evans in 2007.
