Abstract: Mechanism of carcinogenecity and cancer progression has been explored for decades, however it is2 {4 e  f! Y6 [0 ^, x
still unclear because of the complexity of carcinogenesis progress, the limited techniques, and lack of# o& m; K) k2 z6 V  o
knowledgements. Recently, cancer stem cells from several types of tumors were isolated, identified and preliminarily
- c& k0 l6 d% F2 F6 g- J. V2 e# W9 [characterized, which might provide a novel clue for explanation of tumorigenesis and establishment of
; \3 T+ X8 \& G9 f! ^$ u; Tnovel strategy of effective chemotherapy. Many reports have suggested that cancer stem cells possessed the4 l9 {+ |# _, W; F. r6 Z6 h
properties of self-renewal, strong potentials of proliferation, which might play important roles in progression,
2 w. l9 E6 Y, j+ ]recurrence and metastasis of cancer. Meanwhile, chemotherapeutic failure may be associated with the drug% a4 v) X) T$ V' O1 N# b2 m
resistance of cancer stem cells. This review described the recent progress in cancer stem cell research as well as
1 q5 b1 R+ r( B7 ^$ }: [& R4 T3 Nmany problems that remained to be solved.
