Abstract: Mechanism of carcinogenecity and cancer progression has been explored for decades, however it is
! M9 R) P9 R6 O" o. Ostill unclear because of the complexity of carcinogenesis progress, the limited techniques, and lack of+ i- w/ J) G$ d& x+ w! k! s# c1 z
knowledgements. Recently, cancer stem cells from several types of tumors were isolated, identified and preliminarily
4 d, ~" E; ?$ d8 Acharacterized, which might provide a novel clue for explanation of tumorigenesis and establishment of* ?$ L, C4 h7 W6 B* z
novel strategy of effective chemotherapy. Many reports have suggested that cancer stem cells possessed the: K+ ~3 S- t; }( n9 @  H: S1 o
properties of self-renewal, strong potentials of proliferation, which might play important roles in progression,6 p6 y* Q2 Y/ T. g( r
recurrence and metastasis of cancer. Meanwhile, chemotherapeutic failure may be associated with the drug8 r# l# d" g( Z$ d2 |2 L0 `; T
resistance of cancer stem cells. This review described the recent progress in cancer stem cell research as well as
