stroke, can have devastating consequences. There are currently no reparative therapies
$ P' i& _6 d' t) O2 }for neurological injury, with most treatments designed to limit secondary damage.  u$ }% _' L* W" r8 @
The idea that exogenous stem and progenitor cells have the potential to
. Y' f) Q* Q, L* T  |% Lpromote a reparative response to injury is now supported by pre-clinical data,# s% k7 n  `! ~8 n! w' z4 K3 m
prompting early translational studies using progenitor cell therapies. To that end,3 j' t' }+ b$ u) s+ B( n* e
this text explores the unique aspects of neurological injury and focuses on the critical6 }6 I& a: ]6 M$ |1 W6 ?- v
translational issues of cell delivery: routes of administration, types of progenitor1 a5 X& c$ P; U2 s$ N  z
cells (alone and/or in combination), timing of delivery, and adjuncts to promote cell% T9 R0 e" ~' n9 v
engraftment/survival/effectiveness. Finally, measuring the effects of transplanted
0 r) N) m7 e; A3 _/ A) \$ ycells and cell tracking is explored in several chapters.
5 f/ i9 h7 [  _  R& l! ]* Q- M/ ?) D4 p6 O9 nEven while compiling this monograph, the paradigms of how cell-based therapeutics
. ?3 W7 P5 E, v( u& L# u: Maffect neurological injury have been changing. Mechanisms that seemed* K$ N6 D1 X! M, k
reasonable and well-supported are being re-examined, and this necessarily drives
4 _$ z. b+ Z: K- ~9 \the movement toward various clinical trial plans. The earliest clinical trials are
+ x7 b4 D) L6 D. u% v+ N  l% Ebeginning, and as this monograph goes to press, Phase 2 studies in TBI and stroke# s; ^/ F  \. E9 p  z$ b4 V1 r: n
will begin. The developments in the field may ultimately offer realistic hope for
. p) t- q0 k0 W5 y$ @9 pimprovement in patients with severe injuries, and the work on these vexing problems
) _. H6 ?$ C) c; V  X& `will be the key to unlocking future treatments.3 v) Y4 m5 ?9 I) j) G
