PreviousstudiesbyMorrisonandMichigancolleagueMichaelF.ClarkeshowedthattheBmi-1geneisneededtomaintainstemcellsfromtheblood.Thenewstudy,reportedinNature,showsthatthegeneisalsorequiredbynervestemcellsfromthebrainandgut.Thenewstudyfurthershowsthatthegeneaffectstheprocessofproliferation,buthasnoeffectonhowlongacellsurvives.$ p3 M- _, R5 [7 M8 d- O5 } x
MaartenvanLohuizenoftheNetherlandsCancerCenterinAmsterdamdiscoveredtheBmi-1geneincancercellsin1991andfoundthatitblockstwoproteinsthatnormallyinhibitcellproliferation.
