The elite model and stochastic model are not necessarily exlusive with each other. The reprogramminng process involves several barriers, however the process of overcoming these barriers may involve stochastic events. The "elite cells" in the population, such as stem cells, can be more efficiently reprogrammed into iPS cells, partially due to less barriers between these cells and pluripotent stem cells. The non-elite cells can also be reprogrammed into iPS cells once the barriers are broken or avoided. It just takes longer. The work by Prof. Jaenisch proved that all cells in the fibroblast population could be reprogrammed into iPS cells: Direct cell reprogramming is a stochastic process amenable to acceleration. |
