Wehavediscoveredasyntheticchemical,namedcardiogenol,whichcanselectivelydifferentiateembryonicstemcellsintobeatingcardiacmusclecells,saysXuWu,agraduatestudentinthelabofPeterG.Schultz,Ph.D,professorofchemistryatTheScrippsResearchInstituteinLaJolla,Calif.Embryonicstemcellsrepresentapotentiallyunlimitedsourceofcardiomyocytes-cellsthatcanrepairdamagedhearttissueinthebody-butuntilnowscientistshavebeenunabletocontrolthedirectionofembryonicstemcellstousetheminthetreatmentofheartdisease.
