Becauseembryonicstemcellscanturnintoanytypeofcellinthebody,manyscientistsbelievetheyholdincrediblepromisefortreatingavarietyofdegenerativediseases.Quiteafewscientifichurdles,however,standinthewayoftangibletherapiesforsuchmaladiesasdiabetes,Alzheimer’s,Parkinson’sandheartdisease.) Wehavediscoveredasyntheticchemical,namedcardiogenol,whichcanselectivelydifferentiateembryonicstemcellsintobeatingcardiacmusclecells,saysXuWu,agraduatestudentinthelabofPeterG.Schultz,Ph.D,professorofchemistryatTheScrippsResearchInstituteinLaJolla,Calif.Embryonicstemcellsrepresentapotentiallyunlimitedsourceofcardiomyocytes-cellsthatcanrepairdamagedhearttissueinthebody-butuntilnowscientistshavebeenunabletocontrolthedirectionofembryonicstemcellstousetheminthetreatmentofheartdisease.

Theytestedthecardiogenolcompoundsbyusingembryonicstemcellsfrommice.Aftersevendaysgrowinginatissueculturedish,themajorityofthestemcellswereconvertedintobeatingcardiacmusclecells.

InadifferentpaperpublishedrecentlyintheJournaloftheAmericanChemicalSociety,Dingandhiscolleaguesreportedthediscoveryofanothersmallmolecule-calledreversine-thatappearstoconvertadultcellsnormallyprogrammedtocreateskeletalmusclesbackintoprecursorcellswithsimilarpropertiesasstemcells.

Muchmoreworkisrequiredtounderstandthebiologicalpropertiesandmechanismsofreversine,butthesepreliminaryresultsraisethetantalizingpossibilitythatitmaybepossibletosynthesizeacompoundthatcreatesviablestemcellsfromadulttissue,Dingsays.Suchcellswouldnotberejectedbytheimmunesystem,sincetheycomedirectlyfromthepatientwhoneedsthem.
