Becauseembryonicstemcellscanturnintoanytypeofcellinthebody,manyscientistsbelievetheyholdincrediblepromisefortreatingavarietyofdegenerativediseases.Quiteafewscientifichurdles,however,standinthewayoftangibletherapiesforsuchmaladiesasdiabetes,Alzheimer’s,Parkinson’sandheartdisease.

Muchmoreworkisrequiredtounderstandthebiologicalpropertiesandmechanismsofreversine,butthesepreliminaryresultsraisethetantalizingpossibilitythatitmaybepossibletosynthesizeacompoundthatcreatesviablestemcellsfromadulttissue,Dingsays.Suchcellswouldnotberejectedbytheimmunesystem,sincetheycomedirectlyfromthepatientwhoneedsthem.
