( z2 S* T8 h; Y: f8 LOn the cover: In this issue, Baker et al. show that transcription circuits can diversify through a “hybrid state” in which multiple forms of regulation are present. Formation of this state is made possible by cooperative binding and modularity of the transcription regulators involved. The transitions explored in the study explain how a network of mating-type identity genes controlled via transcriptional activation in an ancestral yeast species came to be regulated by transcriptional repression in derived species.
