Thequestionnowiswhysomestudieshavefoundthatblood-formingstemcellscanrepairtheheartwhileothersshowthatthoseadultstemcellsretaintheirblood-formingfate.Thequestionisparticularlytimelygiventhathumantrialsarealreadyunderwaybasedonthestrengthofearlierfindingsrefutedbythenewresearch.2 N+ e4 v y& a& o6 x! Balsaminjectedthosecellsdirectlyintotheheartmuscleof23miceinwhichshehadinducedaheartattack.Theinjectedcellsproducedagreenproteinthatiseasilyvisibleunderamicroscope.Shethenexaminedtheheartmusclesofthosemice10daysand30daysaftertheinjectiontosearchforsignsoftransplantedblood-formingstemcells.

Balsamfoundthat30daysafterinjectingtheblood-formingstemcells,themicediedatthesamerateasthoseinanothergroupthatreceivedonlywateraftertheirinducedheartattacks.Eventhoughthetransplantedstemcellsdidn’thelpthemicesurvive,thestemcell-injectedgroupdidhaveslightimprovementsinhowwelltheirheartspumpedblood.
