Stemcellshavetheabilitytogiverisetodifferentcelltypesinthebody.Theyhavethepotentialtoreplacetissuesdamagedbydisease.
3 X, c; X2 j+ {: w9 @  gEmbryonicstemcellscangiverisetoanycelltypeandthushavethegreatestpotentialtotreatthewidestrangeofdiseases.However,theyarecontroversialbecauseharvestingthemrequiresthedestructionofembryos.Adultstemcells,whichcanbederivedfromadulttissueswithoutharmingthedonor,offeralesscontroversialalternative,althoughtheycangiveriseonlytoalimitednumberofcelltypes.
