stroke, can have devastating consequences. There are currently no reparative therapies
0 n, V, z% n0 J9 Ifor neurological injury, with most treatments designed to limit secondary damage.
/ j4 ?2 T3 |) l& NThe idea that exogenous stem and progenitor cells have the potential to, X9 h8 D3 Y- O9 y1 s
promote a reparative response to injury is now supported by pre-clinical data,
, k: _* c1 L! D5 ~) ]prompting early translational studies using progenitor cell therapies. To that end,
: v& L% N% D( X! Athis text explores the unique aspects of neurological injury and focuses on the critical* o/ C/ q) a3 m$ L, C2 Z
translational issues of cell delivery: routes of administration, types of progenitor5 L5 u9 t8 B; [; g1 h- _- M" r
cells (alone and/or in combination), timing of delivery, and adjuncts to promote cell
0 |4 J* b- }$ Cengraftment/survival/effectiveness. Finally, measuring the effects of transplanted* ^" Q' I  p: D4 R+ c5 [
cells and cell tracking is explored in several chapters.
1 u, C0 F" s7 {Even while compiling this monograph, the paradigms of how cell-based therapeutics
( w4 W+ @0 b- h) I8 G' H5 n2 ?9 Q5 naffect neurological injury have been changing. Mechanisms that seemed
+ i8 D5 z5 m+ areasonable and well-supported are being re-examined, and this necessarily drives
: v/ d7 t9 P7 L  w6 Fthe movement toward various clinical trial plans. The earliest clinical trials are
- N  J; Z  d  ?beginning, and as this monograph goes to press, Phase 2 studies in TBI and stroke
) j) x) z6 ]2 Mwill begin. The developments in the field may ultimately offer realistic hope for( \5 u) Z; h7 Z, O0 g% c4 @
improvement in patients with severe injuries, and the work on these vexing problems
/ L4 `; C/ c2 c4 Awill be the key to unlocking future treatments.
