ABSTRACT
( q1 G9 `1 m$ ~- o3 H8 dMesenchymal stem cells are adherent stromal cells, initially isolated from the bone marrow, characterized by their ability: U+ z5 ` u- Y
to differentiate into mesenchymal tissues such as bone, cartilage and fat. They have also been shown to suppress/ C n% _* m+ W* H+ `
immune responses in vitro. Because of these properties, mesenchymal stem cells have recently received a very high profile.8 \$ d' O } P K. O5 Y: Q
Despite the dramatic benefits reported in early phase clinical trials, their functions remain poorly understood.8 G A- [: X! g% Z0 p
Particularly, several questions remain concerning the origin of mesenchymal stem cells and their relationship to other
- l/ n) o' S1 N4 I- O# ustromal cells such as fibroblasts. Whereas clear gene expression signatures are imprinted in stromal cells of different) c+ o6 t0 r7 n2 i$ @" y
anatomical origins, the anti-proliferative effects of mesenchymal stem cells and fibroblasts and their potential to differentiate7 `; u! v' Q4 n( o
appear to be common features between these two cell types. In this review, we summarize recent studies in the
3 g. [$ `1 [3 `1 I) {0 _context of historical and often neglected stromal cell literature, and present the evidence that mesenchymal stem cells and9 l( E) }" V& Z5 T7 S
