On the cover: Bacterial pathogens exploit sophisticated mechanisms to regulate and promote virulence. The human pathogen Listeria monocytogenes invades diverse immune cells, where they are encased in phagosomes. The bacteria escape from the phagosomes and replicate efficiently within the host cytosol. In this issue, Rabinovich et al. provide evidence that the competence system, which facilitates DNA uptake in other bacteria but not in Listeria, is important for escaping the host phagosomes. Expression of the competence genes is regulated by genomic excision of a prophage located within the open reading frame of the competence system activator gene. The cover image depicts the “matryoshka principle,” in which a bacterial parasite modulates the virulence of its host in humans. Artwork by Lena Guberman.% w( c; W4 v' w# |6 R7 @! r0 V
