On the cover: Adhesion molecules span the synaptic cleft where they ensure recognition by presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons and organize signaling complexes. In the present issue, Peixoto et al. (pages 396–409) show that activity-dependent cleavage of the postsynaptic adhesion molecule neuroligin-1 by matrix metalloprotease 9 dampens presynaptic release of the neurotransmitter glutamate. The cover is an image of a handmade quilt crafted by Susana da Silva depicting this cleavage event at a single glutamatergic synapse.
