Theproductscouldbeavailableinthenextthreeyears,saidMartinMcGlynn,presidentandchiefexecutiveofficerofStemCellsInc.,ofPaloAlto,Calif.,whichisworkingtodevelopmedicaltreatmentsderivedfromadultstemcells.McGlynnwasexpectedtomakesimilarremarksatTechvest's4thAnnualHealthcareConference&ExpoinBostonWednesday.

Embryonicstemcellscangiverisetoanycelltypeandthushavethegreatestpotentialtotreatthewidestrangeofdiseases.However,theyarecontroversialbecauseharvestingthemrequiresthedestructionofembryos.Adultstemcells,whichcanbederivedfromadulttissueswithoutharmingthedonor,offeralesscontroversialalternative,althoughtheycangiveriseonlytoalimitednumberofcelltypes.
4 k9 N7 g' F( _Mypredictionisthat...we'relikelytoseeoneortwostemcellproductsonthemarketinthisdecade,McGlynnsaid.Productsderivedfromadultstemcellsarelikelytobethefirstproductsbecausethesearefurtheralonginthedevelopmentprocessanddon'thavealltheregulatoryhurdlesthatareassociatedwithembryonicstemcells,hesaid.
