The idea that exogenous stem and progenitor cells have the potential to
- \9 \0 \2 t2 h: I" x5 _promote a reparative response to injury is now supported by pre-clinical data,
1 F: m* k; E' a2 P' m" X5 D& x; rprompting early translational studies using progenitor cell therapies. To that end, `8 F m" a K1 U
this text explores the unique aspects of neurological injury and focuses on the critical2 G1 U! J, b0 i7 A
translational issues of cell delivery: routes of administration, types of progenitor
5 S" V8 a( z U7 }1 vcells (alone and/or in combination), timing of delivery, and adjuncts to promote cell/ r9 t7 p! h+ W# ^; |
engraftment/survival/effectiveness. Finally, measuring the effects of transplanted
8 t: }" G1 c9 xcells and cell tracking is explored in several chapters.' x2 ` \1 Z3 Z: r! R
Even while compiling this monograph, the paradigms of how cell-based therapeutics( C! m5 }; M3 w: V. i/ d! v; L9 w! k
affect neurological injury have been changing. Mechanisms that seemed5 k; d( u' l2 U' }, I
reasonable and well-supported are being re-examined, and this necessarily drives
7 x( E0 w9 W* k& d3 sthe movement toward various clinical trial plans. The earliest clinical trials are# J2 m7 B, ]8 z+ k
beginning, and as this monograph goes to press, Phase 2 studies in TBI and stroke
/ G0 V: ~0 V/ W9 rwill begin. The developments in the field may ultimately offer realistic hope for
