stem cells of mouse bone marrow. By designing clonogenic assays to measure stem cell differentiation* y0 `' F2 x5 u0 K6 t% `
in vitro and serial transplantation assays to study stem cell repopulating ability in vivo, Till and) J/ s0 z+ c3 J2 b
McCulloch defined the hallmark characteristics of stem cells.. f( T  r4 ~6 n: i% m2 f2 S1 s0 Y
The field of stem cell research has come a long way in 50 years, as we hope will be apparent from this. Y1 Z- }5 N# x$ S$ Q
year’s Special Review Issue. Our goal in this issue is to highlight the remarkable biological features of4 p: C/ ^4 e, \. I2 G- H
stem cells, the molecular pathways that control these characteristics, and the ways in which these enigmatic+ N3 q0 e4 c! _8 q% F3 J* y. E! `, ]
