major financial returns of biotechnology, i.e. bread, beers, wines, cheeses,
' D: `/ P; s+ x; J" @etc. Modern biotechnological processes have generated a wide range of new
9 o3 y5 T" V! V; X8 `. J( G/ Pand novel products including antibiotics, vaccines and monoclonal antibodies,4 G/ @, y# f( S
the production of which has been optimised by improved fermentation" `# P) H& O! r: m% {
practices. Biotechnology has been further revolutionised by a range
6 A3 y+ [* G4 v5 q, Jof new molecular biology innovations, allowing unprecedented molecular
' g3 j; O6 z; t: v! xchanges to be made to living organisms. The increasing understanding of
9 M4 O, e6 j# S/ \5 {1 Bgenomics and proteomics has led to the creation of a vast range of transgenic/ R* X* B2 n/ H' L9 B2 v9 ^
microorganisms, agricultural (genetically modified) crops and animals,
; `7 r, o9 V1 iand major new recombinant protein drugs, and has revolutionised- `* N9 y  N- p% W! I+ g
activities in the traditional food and drinks industries. In the environment,, S3 q, s, G" b/ i
biotechnology innovations are creating major advances in water
0 t; c4 N4 F3 Z/ }. j' _and land management and also remediating the pollution generated by3 L0 R7 {' C4 a  ]
over-industrialisation.
& a# D' Y' E" }" jThere have been vast investments in molecular diagnostics, not only in
& v- G/ i) O; M( H% Kmedicine but in plant and animal agriculture and the environment. Will7 T  ~- d, ^9 O: E$ b5 z1 T
the huge potential of stem cells for remedial medicine soon be realised?1 K0 A5 d. G2 ^/ _
Until recently, much attention has been given to determining the ‘nuts3 G/ D5 G' ^/ ~$ V, Q: L
and bolts’ of biological systems. Now, systems biology is aiming to describe) X* R- |- W- ^- O; w( r. ?% D
and to understand the operation of complex biological systems and ultimately

Some of the new aspects of biotechnology, such as genetic engineering,

character. Regulatory authorities throughout the world are now examining- }6 t; U% q2 U$ ^$ G0 J1 Z; I; S

common sense will prevail.

complex nature of living systems. By doing so they will generate a greater
3 x( z- f9 j* v3 flevel of confidence and trust between the scientific community and the

integrated overview of its complex, multifaceted and often ill-maligned
